This Pattern with Weave class makes a great companion to our Pattern with Colour in July. In this two-part class Mary will be looking at pattern as applied to the weave. There will be elements of colour included in the work but the main focus will be on how the warps become an integral part of the pattern making.
Session one will introduce a new form for working with a functional pocket. A new material will be suggested too, 4mm cotton braided rope, which will mean working at a slightly larger scale in the warp and a softer weft, such as wool. Setting up the pocket will be the starting point for this class. Using single and paired twining, the pocket will be the canvas for weaving a simple twill pattern. This will be worked in one and then two colours. Mary will discuss how to design a twill for a pocket as opposed to a vertical pattern.
To follow in session two, we will look at how a pattern can be formed using the warps alone, working compact and spaced twining. This will be done using the small pod design from the original Introduction to Twining class earlier in the year. Mary will demonstrate a larger pocket with firmer clean edged warps and manipulated warps. She will also show how to make a simple woven border to finish the ends neatly.
