Timeless Tesserae: A Mosaic Tabletop
Sat 28th February
10am - 4pm
Tutor: Simon Sonsino
Some manual dexterity is required for this workshop, as participants will use nippers and wheeled nippers. This workshop is suitable for complete beginners and those with some experience.
We will be creating a Roman-style tabletop using the direct method. This technique involves gluing the tesserae directly onto the base. A tessera is an individual tile (plural tesserae); we will mainly use marble pieces, with a few ceramic ones included.
The tabletop base is made from MDF, measuring 50 cm in diameter and 9 mm thick. It will have a basic circular design already in place, which you can either follow or adapt to your own style. The finished tabletop will be suitable for interior use only. We will discuss leg options during the workshop; however, as everyone’s preferences will differ, you will need to purchase the legs separately from a suitable retailer.
We’ll begin the day by grouting a small pre-prepared coaster. This will give you hands-on experience so that when you grout your tabletop at home, you’ll know exactly what to do. While we are unlikely to complete the tabletop within the day, you’ll leave with the skills, materials, tesserae, glue, and grout you need to finish it confidently at home.
