  • This class is designed for beginners.  If you fancy having a go at making your own books, but feel daunted by the processes, then this is the workshop for you.

In this workshop Janina will take you through all the steps to make three different styles of handmade book.  They are all easy to make and need a minimum amount of equipment.

Once you’ve mastered the basics each of these styles of books they can be taken in many different directions, using a variety of materials and by changing the sizes and shapes.

    The three books are:

    • Japanese stab stitchThis is a traditional style of book with a soft card cover and attractive stitching along one side of the book. The demonstration piece will be A6 landscape and a simple stitch pattern.
    • Flower book - The inside pages are based on an origami fold and, once glued together,  the pages open out like a flower. This book will have stiff card covers, which we will cover with decorative paper. The demonstration piece will be 11cm square
    • Flip flop book - Pamphlet stitch is probably the easiest of the bookbinding stitches and Janina will show you all the steps involved. She will also show you how to make a card ‘flip flop’ cover which is an intriguing structure that opens in two directions. The finished piece will be 21cm high and 7.5cm wide and will contain 2 pamphlet stitch booklets.

Janina will also show you lots of other variations which you can try after the class.  This class is accompanied by step-by-step, detailed written instructions for each of the three books which you can download and keep.

You are welcome to work along during the session, but we will be working quite quickly to fit everything in and so you may prefer to finish some of the books after the live session.
