This class is suitable for those with some basic experience. (The class will not be suitable for complete beginners - we plan to run the beginners classes again next year - please let us know if you are interested.)

This online class is a follow on from skills learnt in Introduction to Twining – Parts One, Two, Three, and Four.  Part Five introduces an alternative start with a circle opening. It draws on skills learnt in the other classes to develop ideas further.

In the first session, we will be looking at how to create a circle start through the use of a ring. Mary will illustrate different rings and how they can used as well as how to make a ring of your own, with a range of materials. Techniques for attaching warps to the rings will be demonstrated, with alternative methods depending on how you wish the start to look. We will be considering whether the warps are worked flat, with or without edges, or how the warps could generate a form or a tube. Towards the end of the class, you will be invited to watch and join in to make a flat warp on a ring sample.

In session two, we will learn a more complex start without a ready-made ring. Mary will demonstrate how to set up a line as an anchor for the warps, which can be brought together into a circle. The next stage will be to watch how to set up a ring of twining without an anchor line by using a board and pins to assist! Mary will show how to do this, for you to try later, if you wish. Finally, Mary will offer one more idea of a decorative circle start with warps inside warps.

Although this second class is full of content, the recording will enable you to watch parts again if you want to! As before Mary will show pieces from her sketchbox for you to see how the techniques can be applied.
