Egyptomania was a phenomenon that was taken up by architects, designers and artists from the late 18th century through to the end of the 19th century.
Artists such as Edward Poynter, Edwin Long and Lawrence Alma-Tadema reimagined the glories of ancient Egypt from the discoveries made by archaeologists throughout the Victorian age. The Royal Academician David Roberts had earlier visited and explored the topography of the Nile and the pyramids, while the watercolourist F.G. Lewis depicted its peoples and customs. The Pre-Raphaelite painters Thomas Seddon and Holman Hunt also travelled there.
In this ONLINE talk, we look at interesting examples of this obsession and the many other surprising connections between Ancient Egypt and the British Empire. The talk briefly covers the legacy of this fascination into the 20th century, particularly in relation to Hollywood films.
Martin will provide a list of helpful books and links to further explore on a PDF following each of the talks via the class information page.
