A Picture within a Picture
Tues 11th November
10am - 11:15am UK Time
Tutor: Martin Beek
Bookings Close: Tues 28 October
Martin examines how artists throughout the ages have depicted other artworks within their own paintings. Some group portraits pay homage to other artists, sometimes art collectors who were eager to show off their good taste. At times the pictures are doorways to another scene and enhance an ongoing narrative. Such paintings depict studios where one can glean an insight into the creative process.
Artists as diverse at Vasari, Van Gogh or Zoffany make references to other artists in their own inimitable styles. Some of these paintings speak of artistic rivalry or admiration, sometimes the desire to emulate. Underneath it all is a link to the ongoing exploration of the world we live in through visual art.
The talk looks at the symbolism and hidden meaning in such paintings and how we can enjoy and interpret such works in our own time.
Martin will provide a list of helpful books and links to further explore on a PDF following each of the talks via the class information page.
