This relaxed and enjoyable two-day workshop is suitable for all levels of experience, provided participants bring their own functioning sewing machine with a free-motion embroidery foot.

The workshop explores the creative use of patterned printed fabrics in collage, focusing on colour, tone, and the direction of design. You will create a striking bumblebee portrait with a three-dimensional appearance, enhanced through embroidery and mounted for display.

Day 1 – Fabric Collage

  • Using patterned fabrics in collage

  • Layering techniques to create depth and a 3D effect

  • Developing the bumblebee design

Day 2 – Embellishment & Finishing

  • Choosing a background fabric to enhance your subject

  • Introduction to free-motion embroidery

  • Demonstration of stretching and mounting the finished piece onto an artist’s canvas

Please note: Everyone works at a different pace. While all stages will be fully demonstrated over the two days, some participants may need to complete their piece at home.

You Will Learn

  • How to use patterned fabrics effectively in textile collage

  • Techniques for layering to suggest form and depth

  • How to select a background fabric that complements your design

  • The basics of free-motion embroidery
(Participants must bring their own sewing machine with a free-motion foot, or needle and thread if choosing to hand stitch)

  • How to mount and present a finished textile artwork
