This class is suitable for those who have been following Mary's Twining series with Ardington or those with a little experience. It is the third in a linked series of two-part workshops - full details are shown below.
In this two-part class we will focus on form and how it can be developed with the addition and subtraction of warps. Following on from the previous two classes looking at the basics of twining and then bases and borders, this class will allow more freedom and flow in working towards the making of organic forms.
Week one will begin with a discussion about why warps might need to be inserted using examples from Mary’s sketchbox. Mary will demonstrate three different methods of inserting double warps and then single warps. You will be invited to join in, or watch, as Mary makes a warp sample for addition to your sketchbox. This will include top tips on how to add in easily and correctly. Removing warps will then be covered and an alternative to adding in, if you are wanting a denser weave.
In week two we will discuss the how and when to add or subtract warps, and how to achieve an asymmetric/ symmetric form. As before, Mary will work online to make a pod (a pod being a rounded form with an opening) with inserted warps. This can be watched or you could join in. Finally, Mary will demonstrate how to create slits, openings and points by reversing the twining and subtracting warps.
Further classes in the series are as follows:
- Slits, Edges & Points: 16th & 30th April
- Circle Starts: 21st May & 4th June
If there is enough interest, we will also be running three additional skill development classes later in the year:
- Pattern with Colour
- Pattern with Weave
- Pea-pod and Bean-pod Forms
