A Splash of Watercolour
Thur 23rd October
10am - 4pm
Tutor: Kevin Scully
This workshop is suitable for beginners with a little experience, as well as those with more know-how.
You’ll be using watercolours in a loose and lively way, with an emphasis on creating exciting imagery rather than focusing on fine detail. The workshop will explore how to paint water in its many forms—from crashing seas and tranquil rivers to waterfalls and muddy puddles.
You’ll learn how to use wet-in-wet techniques for soft, atmospheric effects, and more defined strokes for reflections. We’ll cover how to begin with a base wash and add detail while the paper is still damp, how to leave white space for light reflections, and how to consider surrounding elements like sky colour and foreground to build a believable scene. You’ll also discover how to use white gouache sparingly to add extra dimension to the tops of waves.
All reference material will be provided, though you’re welcome to bring your own images if you’d like to work from personal inspiration.
This is a workshop for everyone, though some prior experience with watercolours will be helpful.
