It goes without saying that colour is an essential element of art. Used throughout history, artists use colour to describe a subject, to create mood, and to convey meaning through cultural connections and resonances. Following on from the recent success of the Colour in Art series, Martin will be taking a deeper look at Orange.
From Frederic Lord Leighton’s “Flaming June” to the works of German Expressionists of the early twentieth century, Orange plays a crucial role. Who could forget J.M.W. Turner’s evocative sunsets or the rich oranges in the American western desert paintings of Georgia O’Keeffe?
Vincent van Gogh captured the heat and the sunshine around Arles, and the colour orange continues to thrill and surprise us. Martin finds some interesting links within his talk that completes this series on the examination of the artist’s palette.
Martin will provide a list of helpful books and links to further explore on a PDF following each of the talks via the class information page.
