This ONLINE class is suitable for students of all abilities
‘Slow Stitch’ is a popular, creative and intuitive way to create unique and personal projects. It is a simple approach, with a focus on working with re-purposed, thrifted and vintage fabrics and threads.
The principles of ‘slow stitch’ are versatile and adaptable to suit individual preferences - anything goes. You may choose to work with gentle, neutral colours, vibrant prints, or delicate lace and trimmings. Your piece can be plain and simple or embellished with colourful and textured yarn, ribbons, lace or beads.
This workshop will introduce you to the format of ‘slow stitch scrolls’. Often wound and stored around a bobbin or dowel, they can evolve intuitively, piece by piece or can be carefully planned from the outset. During this workshop your tutor, Janice Botterill, will share strategies to begin. Preferring to use natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, wool and silk, she will talk you through her process of editing initial choices to provide the foundations for an interesting and personal piece of work as well as selecting key focal points to provide interest and texture.
There will be time to learn and practice a few simple stitches that can be incorporated and adapted throughout your scroll and Janice will share other online resources and artists that you may be interested in looking at as you develop your own personal style.
You will be encouraged to ‘shop’ the fabrics you have to hand, in your wardrobe, cupboards or sewing box. You may have unfinished projects that can be re-purposed and incorporated into your own unique piece.
Your scroll may become a stitched diary, a way of marking the seasons or a sampler of fabrics, colours and textures.
