Experienced art teacher and mixed media artist, Jo Dixon, will explore with you the popular subject of drawing and painting buildings.  Jo will teach you how to tackle perspective, working in both a structured and an expressive style, all held within the formal art elements of Line, Form, Shape, Texture, Tone, and Pattern.

Working from collected reference photos of architecture you love, you will learn how to sketch effectively and how to create compositions that express your observations in a variety of media.  Each week Jo will focus on different artists and approaches, inspiring you to experiment with a diverse range of drawing and painting techniques.

By the end of the course, you will know how to simplify complex structures, have developed your own visual language, and gained the confidence to use perspective as a foundation for your imaginative work.

Jo will set a creative brief each week for you to work on between classes.  These will further develop the skills you have learnt and you will receive one-to-one feedback, via our class information page, on every assignment you submit throughout the course.

    The course syllabus will cover:

    • The basic techniques of drawing and painting architecture
    • One-point, two-point, and freehand perspective techniques
    • Creative approaches to drawing buildings
    • Using line, tone, and colour expressively
    • Simplifying shapes and structures
    • How to work with a range of references and artist studies
    • Drawing and painting approaches
    • Techniques for working with a variety of materials including a mixed media approach

This course is designed to be enjoyed LIVE on Zoom and we encourage all students to do so, where they can. However, we appreciate that this might not always be possible due to time-zone restrictions or other commitments. Please contact us before booking if you would like to participate by recording only and we can arrange this option for you.

Study Buildings: From Basic Perspective to Creative Expressions forms part of our STUDY programme; a range of longer courses, running over a number of weeks, exploring our most popular subjects in greater depth.  Combining tutor-led live classes with elements of self-study, these courses are designed to stretch and challenge you, whilst maintaining the small & friendly learning environment we are known for.
